The Oak Institute for the Study of International Human Rights is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Oak Human Rights Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship offers a one-semester appointment as an activist-in-residence at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, USA, designed to support human rights defenders engaged in on-the-ground activism. The fellowship provides a much-needed respite to allow fellows to reflect, write, and share their work with the campus community.
This year’s focus is on film/photography and human rights, with particular attention to the role of creative expression in raising awareness and sparking discussions on human rights violations.
Nominees should be individuals who have faced, or are at risk of facing, human rights violations due to their artistic work, or those who have used their art to highlight specific human rights issues. The fellowship offers a stipend of $33,000, along with housing, health coverage, transportation, and additional benefits. The position also involves participation in a lecture series or symposium, as well as regular interaction with Colby College students.
The fellowship is available for the fall semester of 2017 (mid-August through mid-December). Nomination submissions are due by November 6, 2016, with completed applications due by December 4, 2016.
